The beginning of Yurrita and Sons…

Yurrita & Sons started in 1867 when José Miguel Mauleón Juango, a whosaler from Navarre, decided to settle down in Mutriku.

He dedicated to trade fresh fish in this Guipuzcoan port, Navarre, Aragon and Castile.

In that year they opened the new factory and shortly after, an hotel or residence where the muleteers could stay in, during the stay in Mutriku.

Mauleón was married with María Antonia Osés Mauleón and they had three daughters. Two of the married with two young of Ordizia, José Agapito y José Miguel Yurrita Olavegoitia. Both, sons of Juan Antonio Yurrita Urrestarazu who was one of the main chandler of Carlos VII`s troops during the Carlist War.

José Agapito Yurrita Olavegoitia, husband of Francisca Antonia Mauleón Osés, took over the company in 1879, finally he bought the business created by his father-in-law. With him, the named of the company changed, it named Agapito Yurrita.

During the first ages of XX centuries, fisher man started coming to Mutriku attracted by the cuantity and quality of Cantabrian Anchovies. They visited Mutriku in spring and they  lodged in Mauleón, using Agapito Yurrita´s instalation to produce the salted anchovies, then they send it to Italia..

The employees of Agapito Yurrita learned this technique, named “alla vera carne”. Since the, the main activity of the company was the salting, algo the fish in Pickled Sauce. During the first ages, all the production of salting products was sent to Italia, exactly to Génova, city where companies dedicated to the distribution.

That`s the way that Yurrita and Sons started exporting, actually we export to more than 60 countries in the world.
